Calling all bands

The events team at Portsmouth City Council are looking for local bands to play at this year’s Live at the Bandstand.

Every Sunday between the end of May and the end of August, the bandstand will host a free afternoon of live music set in a natural amphitheatre behind the D-Day museum overlooking the Solent.

Each week offers a different style of music and at least half of the bands playing are local.

For 2010 the events team wants to include bands from Fareham, Gosport and Havant in the programme. They will be running open auditions, similar to battle of the bands, to check out the local musical talent. The winners of each heat will go through to the final where a panel of judges will select 4 bands for a showcase at the bandstand.

Criteria for selection

Your band:

  • is an unsigned band from PO1-PO16 areas
  • is a band who have NOT previously played at Bandstand
  • plays original music – there will be heats, and a panel of judges

Covers / tribute bands have already been selected.

All bands / singers and songwriters will be required to submit a demo and from these Express FM will select which bands / singers will make it through to one of the heats.

Heats will take place at Eastney Cellars on Sunday 21 March.

Bands should submit a recent, good quality demo and contact details (including a postal address) to:

Simon Gibbons, Bandstand Competition, Express Fm, 49 Arundel Street, Portsmouth PO1 1SA.

All demos need to have at least three tracks which accurately represent your music.

Every band who sends in an entry should nominate a contact person to be available for an interview with Express FM.

The closing date for demos is Friday 5th March. All demos must be clearly marked Bandstand Competition. Please don’t send demos to the venues.

BBC3 are currently casting for their third series of the ‘World’s Strictest Parents’. The programme sees British teenagers who are aged 16 - 18 years old placed with families in different countries all over the world. They are particularly looking for teenagers who are currently not achieving as highly as they should be academically and who are finding it difficult to get on with their parents.

The aim of the series is to provide teenagers with a valuable experience; with which they can take away key lessons and knowledge of how to behave, not only in a professional light but also at home with their families. Previously we have found that the teenagers who have taken part have come away from the experience with a refreshed and mature outlook in terms of their behaviour and their ambitions.

Lymphoma Association, a charity that provides free information and support to anyone affected by lymphoma – the most common cancer in the 15-30 age group.

To raise awareness of lymphoma, they have launched an exciting campaign, funded by the Department of Health, where the aim is to make young people aware of the symptoms of the disease using the acronym PITS (Persistent lumps, Itching, Tiredness and Sweating.)

To get the message across, they have created a website, where you can log on and find out about lymphoma and also enter an online competition. Basically, they’re asking students to upload an underarm noise made by trapping air in your armpit and then the person who has the highest number of views by March 2nd 2010 will win a trip for two to Paris!
